The Mathematics Society, St.Stephen’s College, organized Professor S.B. Mathur lecture series. The event consisted of two engaging lectures, presented by learned academicians.
The event was open to both Stephanians and outsiders (remotely) and saw a registration count of more than 50 students. The details of the event are as follows:
Date: 17th-18th October 2022
Time: 2-4 pm
Lecture 1:
The first-day lecture delivered by Dr. Amber Habib was on the topic “History in the Mathematics Classrooms”. In this lecture, Dr. Habib emphasized the need to make mathematics classrooms interesting and active by interconnecting the subjects taught in schools. Dr. Habib illustrated this by explaining the mathematical history behind several topics that are taught in schools. In this session, the professor discussed Heron’s method for calculating square roots, Bhaskara’s Sine approximation, the solution to pell’s equation by Brahmagupta and Bhaskaracharya, and several other achievements of early Indian Mathematicians.
Lecture 2:
The second-day lecture on the topic “Solved and Unsolved Problems in Number Theory” was delivered by Dr. Amitabha Tripathi. Dr. Tripathi introduced students to many of the interesting results in number theory focusing on the work of contemporary mathematicians. In this session, professor Tripathi discussed how some of the most troubling problems in number theory were solved by some of the brightest minds in the world.
